Working-time rules, checked on every shift.

For UK and EU employers with shift or hourly staff. Set your limits once. TimeLeaf checks every shift against them before it is rostered, and keeps a record when a manager overrides one.

Seven kinds of limit.

  • Average weekly hours over a reference period, such as 48 hours over 17 weeks
  • A daily maximum
  • Minimum daily rest between shifts
  • Weekly rest: a set number of rests of a set length, as one block or split
  • Night work: a night window, limits on night shifts and a night average
  • Young workers: separate limits for anyone under 18 on the shift date
  • Contracted weekly hours

Presets for some jurisdictions give you a starting point. They are not advice. Your admin sets and reviews every figure, so confirm them with your own adviser.

Every way of giving out work checks first.

A manager placing someone by hand can still override a refusal, and the override is logged. Auto-roster and shift swaps cannot be overridden.

01

Per policy

Limits live on an overtime policy. Each employee gets the policy that applies to them, set per person, team or location.

02

Auto-roster

When the roster is generated, anyone who would break a rule is skipped. The reason is named, so you can see why a slot is open.

03

By hand

Place someone yourself and you see every refusal at once. You must acknowledge each one by name before the shift is saved.

04

Swaps

When two people swap shifts, the rules are checked for both of them.

Written opt-outs. Stricter limits for under-18s.

Record an employee’s written opt-out from the weekly average, with its notice period and any withdrawal. An opted-out person is not refused under the average. Every other limit still applies.

Age comes from the date of birth, on the date of each shift. An opt-out cannot be recorded for anyone under 18, and the policy’s under-18 limits apply instead, where you have set them.
